How To Get Huge Traffic From Social Media Sites

I realized that almost all the top 100 blogs (according to Technorati) have the social media presence. They mainly have their profiles on Twitter, Facebook, and Stumbleupon.

So today I wanted to write about marketing content on social media sites mainly Twitter, Facebook, Stumbleupon, and Digg.

A social media campaign has an inherent viral exposure. If you are using social media sites only as a “link building” resources, then you are limiting your potential.

Here are few changes you can make to your social media campaign that can almost double your results:

1. CONTENT

The success secret to any social media campaign is content. First, observe and analyze what kind of content people like.
Twitter: To find out what’s working with Twitter users, go to https://tweetmeme.com/. You can instantly identify the hottest stories on Twitter and can create one.

Digg: Open digg.com and go to the category you belong. You can identify the most popular stories of a category under “Top in [category name]“.

Stumbleupon: If you belong to the Internet category, go to https://www.stumbleupon.com/discover/internet/ to find out the most popular stories.

Now that you have got an idea of what kind of content works, you can create one.

2. NETWORKING

It is simple to understand that people follow people with similar interests. These people are on all kinds of social media sites including Delicious, Digg, Stumbleupon, Twitter etc.

Put these two things together.

If my interest is in driving traffic to my site but you’re trying to sell network marketing products to me, it doesn’t matter how many times you ask me, I will simply ignore your message or block you.

So, the logic is to network and share your content with people who belong to your niche.

Make 5 – 10 friends every day in Stumbleupon, Digg, Twitter, and Facebook. Start voting the stories of your friends regularly. This is very important. Verify how many people added you as a friend. Add more and more people as friends.

Submit your content and observe how many of them will vote for your content. If the number of votes is less than 30, then you need to add more and more friends. Because you need at least 30 votes to reach the front page.

Also comment first on the stories you think can reach the front page. This way your profile gets more exposure.

No, once you are getting 30 votes consistently for your content, start experimenting with the topics. Observe which kind of topic is getting more number of votes. Write such content in your blog and submit it in the social networking sites.

3. SHARING

Now that you’ve got great content, it is time to market it.
Share your content to your Twitter followers using su.pr. It will also put your content across 1000′s of Stumbleupon users.
Share your content to your digg.com friends and encourage them to “digg” the content.
Make it easy for your Twitter followers to retweet your content.
Share your content on your Facebook page.

4. CONSISTENCY

This is the area most people fail. People subscribe to something because they want to get regular updates. If your daily newspaper starts coming only once a week, you’d probably switch to other newspaper. If you fail to provide content consistently, your network will fade and your audience numbers will drop.

You also need to understand that not all niches do well in social networking sites. For example, SEO and affiliate marketing related content do not do well in Digg. But, they do well with Stumbleupon audiences. Similarly, technology and web design related stuff do well in Delicious.

Focus on doing one of the above steps better every day and before you know it, you will be getting the huge amount of visitors to your site from these sites each and every day.

Basic SEO practices for newbies:

The thing to remember is that SEO isn't a magic bullet. It's important, but no one knows the exact algorithms the SEs use, and each one is different so all you can do is optimize the best you can. There happens to be a few things that you should just always do whenever you make a new website. Don't stress over every little thing, just make sure you are doing it, this should just become kind of automatic for you.

Make sure you fill in your meta tags with a good title, description, and the right keywords. I personally don't think the keywords meta-tag is nearly as important as everyone else on here does, but it gives me a way to organize my keywords list for me to reference. When you start having many different websites, it's good to include whatever notes to yourself you can. When you come back to work on an older site you might not remember eveything you were thinking before. The metatags help you remember your site info as much as it helps the SE figure it out. A good rule of thumb is that anything that won't hurt you for SEO and might help, you should use and use correctly. Definately use the title meta-tag, try to include keywords in the title. Definately use the description meta-tag, google will normally use this for the summary it displays in the listing. It isn't used for indexing so write it for humans, this is what gets people to click on your link when they see it in the SERP. Don't use the same metatags for every page on your site. Take the time to make them be specific to each page.

Create good content. Make sure you have some decent content. Content is what the internet was invented for. If you have unique and quality content, then all the seo and backlinking you're doing is just to get the ball rolling. Give them what they want, show them where it is, and they'll start coming. If it's good enough then it'll eventually start building on its own naturally because people like what they found. That's the idea anyway. So whenever possible use the best page design and the best content possible. Avoid duplicate content between different pages on your site, the SE will most likely penalize your site for that.

Remember, your content isn't just something to get google to like your site, it is the whole point of your site. The content and how you structure it is what will make visitors do what you want when they get there. If it's crap they'll just leave, and 99% of them won't leave by clicking on your adsense or affilliate link, they'll just close the window or use the back button. (yes, of course if your doing blackhat stuff you can make the browser go where you want, but that's for a different discussion.)

Include your keywords. Structure your content correctly, make a few title headers in the content that include keywords (use header tags h1, h2, etc.), try to have a keyword density around 2% in your content, and maybe 4% for the whole page including the metatags, alt tags, anchors, etc.

Be sure that your .htaccess is set up correctly. Decide on which way you want your url to be and stick with it. If you decide to use www then always use it like that in your links, don't use both. I usually set up a 301 for all www requests to redirect to non-www urls. If you don't set that up then every single page on your site can appear to google as having at least one duplicate. If that's the only thing wrong on your site it isn't going to kill you, but it's so easy to fix. If you don't know how to set up a redirect in your .htaccess file then just do a search, there are many other threads explaining it. Check google if you can't find it here. Also, .htaccess only apples if your on an Apache server, Windows servers do it a little differently, if that applies to you then just search google to find out how to do it. If your consitent in your linking, then the only time the redirect will come into play is if you get natural backlinks that you have no control over. You should also specify which you prefer, www or not-www in google tools if you use it. (If you don't then you really should, I recommend you set yourself up an account for webmaster tools and analytics.)

Make a robots.txt file and I like to include a favicon because without them the robots will trigger file not found errors on your server. Be sure to configure your robots.txt correctly. Make a custom 404 page. If your site has more than just a couple of pages then also create a sitemap.xml file. It's not a bad idea to just create a sitemap anyway no matter what, it lets you define the structure of your site to the crawlers. Just search google if you don't know how to do any of that, it's very basic and you can find exact instructions within a minute when you do a search.

Other than that there isn't a lot more you can do for on-site SEO. When people ask about SEO they're always thinking of on-site SEO, but thats the easy and quick part. Just do it and get on with it.

Everything else is off-site SEO and involves building backlinks and promotion.
This is where you need to focus your efforts. This is where the magic bullet is, if there really is one.

Social Bookmarks, Directory Submissions, Profile Links, and Blog Comments are really the easiest place to start getting backlinks. It's not a bad idea to purchase these links from a service. They are easy to make, but to do it right they really need to be posted from many different accounts and ip adresses. A good idea when your starting is to do it yourself a little bit to see how it works, then purchase larger quantities from a service. You want to get a lot of links, but you don't want to over do it. Building to fast can look unnatural, just do some searches and read up on it a little more. How many and how fast is a judgement call you have to make. hold off on more complex linkbuilding until you have a little more experience. Linkwheels and other link structures can be very powerful, but can also hurt your site a lot if not done correctly.

Whenever possible include keyword anchors and title or alt tags on your backlinks. Don't always use the same anchors, vary it up a little, use 3 or 4 different keywords and even do a few with some non keyword anchors. You are trying to look as though a lot of different real people have taken a liking to your site, if it were natural then all links wouldn't be exactly the same, so you want to simulate that same type of randomness. Backlinking strategies are all about simulating the natural events that happen as a site grows in popularity. If you can do it successfully then the SE's will give you good position in the listings, and then hopefully what you are simulating can become reality. The point of all of it is to get traffic.

Change up your anchor text. The idea of backlinking is to simulate that masses of people are becoming interested in your site. It should have some amount of randomness to it in order to look natural. I've seen a few made up stats on what's best, but I think a good rule of thumb is maybe about 45% primary keywords, 35% secondary keywords, and about 15% random unrelated like Click Here, and then about 5% just the url. The exact percentage isn't dramatically important, it just needs to seem like the linking is natural.

Create relevant articles containing your keywords, include backlinks using keyword anchors, and submit to article directories. Article directories are mostly authority sites and your article becomes a relevant backlink to your site. Then create profiles and accounts on blogs, social networking sites, forums etc. Include a link to your website whenever you do that and each one of those become backlinks as well.

Thats the end of it. Well kinda.
Go back and watch your stats to see what keywords are getting the most traffic to your site, analyze the data a little bit and if you need to, remove or add keywords to your content and tags, and adjust the anchors your using in your backlinks.

Continue building links. Remember you're trying to artificially create the appearance to the SE that your site is popular. When that happens naturally, people are always adding new links to your site. Since you are trying to look natural you have to do the same thing. Linkbuilding never stops completely.

OK, there you go. That's that basics of SEO. Everything else is about fine tuning, and has to be looked at for each individual situation.

If you have any more questions, before you start PMing anyone just read through the threads in the White Hat SEO section, and do some searching on google. You can find some really good information from some much smarter people than me.

If there are any SEO gurus that want to expand on this or if you see any errors you think should be discussed, please add your input.

Hope this can help some of you.

Learn SEO Step by Step

Many people can become completely overwhelmed with the process of optimizing their website. Often times, every change you make leads you to another change you need to make. At times the process begins to seem endless.
One issue that causes this, is trying to focus on too many things at once. Approaching this process one baby step at a time is absolutely vital.

YOU HAVE TO LEARN SEO STEP BY STEP
Okay, I know many of you have heard me ask this multiple times, but I am bound to ask it many more times over the coming months.
QUESTION: How do you eat an elephant?
ANSWER: One bite at a time . . . (serious groaning here!)
Now let’s begin to focus on things that will help you keep on track, without becoming totally overwhelmed.
One of the most powerful methods of overcoming this feeling is to put yourself in a position to be able to enjoy rapid rewards for the work that you do. Every step you take is bringing you in the right direction.
HOWEVER, many of us are perfectionist . . . (you already know who you are)
If you wait for your site, (or even a page for that matter) to be perfect before uploading changes, it will take far too long for you to see results. If every change you make brings you a little closer to your target, you get excited. You actually begin to see where you are headed. The more excited you get, the easier it becomes to follow the steps without becoming discouraged.

DO NOT WAIT TO PUBLISH (UPLOAD) CHANGES!
- Once you have selected the title for your page, make the change and publish the page.
- Once you have added some content while working on keyword density, publish the page again.
- Once you have added effective alt tags to a page, publish the page again.
- Once you have added effective heading tags, publish the page again.
- Once you add an effective keyword meta tag, publish the page again.
- Once you add an effective description meta tag, publish the page again.
- Once you have added some effective anchor text links, publish the page again.
- Once you have added title attribute tags to your links, publish the page again.
First, you will begin to rapidly see the results of all your hard work, one step at a time. The second benefit of this method of continually uploading your changes, is that Google LOVES new content. The more “spider food” you feed the bots, the more often they will return looking for more changes.

Above all, relax and have fun.

Don’t worry about how much you are able to do at a time. Do what you CAN do as you can do it. Every baby step brings you that much closer.
Just take things one step at a time at a pace comfortable for you.
I WILL DEFINITELY SEE YOU AT THE TOP!

Before you apply to AdSense

Getting started with AdSense is easy, but when reviewing the applications we get, we've noticed a few common pitfalls. To help make sure your application is approved the first time around, ask yourself the following questions below before submitting.

Do I have what I need to apply?
  • Website: To display Google ads, you need administrative access to the site you submit for AdSense in order to place our JavaScript ad code on your site. Adding the Google code to your site's source code will enable you to show ads, search boxes, and referral units on your pages.

If you don't have a website of your own, that doesn't mean you can't participate in AdSense. We offer a couple of options to help you easily create your own site.

First, there's Blogger, a free tool for setting up and publishing your own blog online. With its easy-to-use and customizable templates, you can create an account and start blogging right away. You can also set up AdSense ads easily through your Blogger account.

If you prefer more flexibility and control, then our web page tool, Page Creator, may be more suitable. Signing up for a Page Creator account is free as well -- all you need is a Gmail account. The best part is that you don't have to download any software or hire a designer. Once you've created your Page Creator site, you can begin displaying Google ads in minutes.
  • Valid payee name: Payments will be made out to the name on your account, so make sure to include your full and valid name, or that of your business, rather than just initials. If banks won't accept the name you enter in the 'Payee Name' field, neither will we.
  • Valid address: We want to make sure your hard-earned money reaches you, so please also provide a complete valid address where you can receive mail. If you live in a country or territory that doesn't have a standard format for addresses, please be sure that your application includes as much information as a mailman would need to find your residence.
Does my website meet all the necessary requirements?
  • Valid URL: If you manage an entire website, give us the URL of your home page. If you manage a blog or other account within a larger website, you should provide the URL of the specific page that you manage and not the URL of the entire hosting website. Don't forget to double check your URL for typos!
  • Fully launched website: Since we won't be able to review websites that are not fully launched or built, please ensure that your site is live and functioning at the time you submit your application.
  • Unique content: We want visitors to sites in the AdSense network to have a good experience, so please publish content that's interesting and unique. Avoid using "doorway" pages created just for search engines, or other cookie cutter approaches such as affiliate programs with little or no original content. If you're participating in an affiliate program, give people a reason to visit your site first.
  • Supported language: We're constantly working to provide targeted, relevant ads in more languages. However, until then, we can only approve your application if the majority of your website is in one of our supported languages.
  • Pay-To Sites: If your site participates in programs that compensate people to perform activities that drive traffic to you, we can't approve your application. Some examples of these "pay-to" programs are sites that encourage users "to click" or "to surf" or "to read email." In addition, you shouldn't encourage others to join these programs in the content, links, or third-party ads on your site.
We also encourage you to read our program policies in detail for further insight on how to create a successful application. Now that you have all the necessary information, now's a good time to apply.

Google Dance

Up to June, 2003, Google has updated the index for their search engine on a roughly monthly basis. While the update is in progress, search results for each of Google's nine datacenters are different. The positions of a site appears to "dance" as it fluctuates minute to minute. "Google dance" is an unofficial term coined to refer to the period when Google is performing the update to its index. Google may be changing their index calculation method to allow for a continuous update (which will effectively end the roughly monthly dances).

The words may or may not be visible to human visitors. While not necessarily a violation of search engine Terms of Service, at least when the words are visible to humans, it detracts from the impact of a page (it looks like spam). It is also possible that search engines may discount the importance of large blocks of text that do not conform to grammatical structures (ie. lists of disconnected keywords). There is no valid reason for engaging in this practice.

This can be useful for experimenting with tweaking a site and judging the resultant effects on the rankings.

Off Page Optimizations - SEO Tutorial

Off page optimizations consist entirely of link building strategies. Because it entails third parties, you will often be limited in how much control you can exert. However, knowing what the search engines are looking for can assist you to optimize those opportunities where you do have control.
Search engines evaluate pages that link to yours for relevance. Having a link from a page discussing widget training services will be more helpful to a widget storefront than a link from "Joe Bob's Land of a Million Free Links". In addition to relevance that search engines will appreciate, links from topically related sites can and will drive traffic to your site in their own right.

General Advice for Maximizing the Value of Links

Every link is a good link, but some links are better than others. When soliciting links from link partners, directories or other venues, you should keep the following in mind:
  • Always link to your home page using your domain name root. Do not link to the page name of the default home page. For example, all home page links on this site link to http://www.webseofaqs.blogspot.com/ and not http://www.webseofaqs.blogspot.com/index.html. Of course, the filename should be included when linking to pages other than the home page.
  • Maintain consistency in using the www. prefix in the URL. Search engines treat http://webseofaqs.blogspot.com/ and http://www.webseofaqs.blogspot.com/ as two different sites.
  • Use your keywords/keyphrases as/in the anchor text for all links whenever appropriate. You usually do not have much control over 3rd party links to your site, but you can control the anchor text for all links within your site and from any 3rd party links that you can define/edit.

Link Building Campaigns

With a new site, it can be helpful to engage in a link building campaign to get your site some immediate exposure. As your site matures and develops more content, you will find that other sites will start linking to it without solicitations.
There are several avenues you can pursue to expand your link building campaign:
  • free directories - Crawling search engines use these human edited directories to find (and categorize) websites. Be sure you get listings for all directories that are applicable:
    • DMOZ - largest free directory. Used by Google to power the Google directory. It can take a long time (months in some cases) for an application to be processed, so patience is golden when applying to DMOZ.
    • WebSavvy
    • JoeAnt - You must apply to become an editor if you do not want to pay for inclusion.
    • Gimpsy - Only accepts sites that offer some interactive features. Be sure to check their guidelines before applying.
    • Zeal - Only accepts non-commercial sites.
When applying to these directories, comply with their instructions and make it as easy as possible for their editors to approve your submission(s). Consider becoming an editor for some directories and you might get the ability to fast-track your own submissions.
  • themed portals - Look for magazines, discussion forums, targeted vertical directories, etc. that pertain to your niche. Request listings where appropriate.
  • press releases / articles - Many websites will be happy to publish a press release or content article and include a link back to your site.
  • industry organizations - Many non-profit organizations offer directories of their membership with links to their websites. Join as many as make sense for your venture.
  • participate in discussion forums - Many internet discussion forums allow hyperlinks in "signature files". Participate in discussions and offer advice and wisdom. Do not spam forums with blatant advertising. This will reflect poorly on you as well as possibly get you banned from the forum.
  • set up a search engine friendly affiliate program - offer commissions on sales of your product(s) for others to advertise your wares and link to your site.
  • RSS news feeds - publish company news though RSS syndication. Other websites pick up the RSS feed and publish your news story (which can include a link back to your site, of course).
  • paid advertising - There are many directories (like Yahoo), portals and websites that offer paid advertising options from text links to banners.

Reciprocal Links

You can use the search engines to find websites that might link to you. Search on your keywords and your competitors' backlinks to find sites that link out to websites in your industry. Visit those sites and try to determine the owner's name (or a manager as appropriate). Send them a personalized e-mail introducing them to your site. Request consideration for a listing on their links page (and include the URL for that page) where your website would be of value to their audience.
Many owners/managers/webmasters will be happy to link to your site if it is germane, quality and useful to their audience. Some might request reciprocation. If their site is useful for visitors to your site, you should consider reciprocating. We do not recommend trading links with websites that have no topical connection to your site. It looks unprofessional and some search engines may be starting to penalize sites for it.
When you solicit a link from another site, be sure to format your requested link to conform to the format published on the target link page. Be sure to use your keyphrases whenever descriptions are published next to links.
As you generate backlinks with keyword rich anchor text or from related authority sites, you will be maximizing your off page optimizations.

On Page Optimizations - SEO Tutorial

Before we dig into on page optimizations, we need to consider how the major search engines index pages. Major search engines use spiders (also called robots) to crawl (trace) the web and find pages by following links just like a human browser might. However, there are technical limitations to what spiders can do. Your site's architecture can make a huge difference in a spider's ability to read and index your pages.
An in-depth dissertation on site architecture is beyond the scope of this tutorial. However, if your site employs:
  • Mostly Flash content
  • Mostly graphic content
  • Dynamically rendered pages (PHP, ASP, etc.) with session IDs
  • Frames
  • Javascript menus
You need to investigate the potential problems spiders are going to have indexing your pages before the following SEO tutorial will be effective. A quick check on the Lynx Viewer will let you see your web site much like the search engine spiders do. Can they see your content and (navigation) links?
SEO lends itself to tunnel vision among the newcomers to the field. The gratification of seeing your pages rising in search engine results for your keyhrases can be addictive. Always keep your visitor in mind when performing your search engine optimizations. Achieving high rankings (and traffic) will only result in higher bandwidth bills if your site does not convert traffic to sales (whether direct or indirect). Never compromise the useability and copy of your site in favor of SEO - avoid SEO tunnel vision. Your conversions/ROI will likely suffer.

Title Tag

Google and most search engines place a lot of emphasis on the title tag for each page. Title tags should include the one or two keyphrases that you will be targeting with that page. The closer the keyphrase is to the beginning of the title, the more weight it carries. Thus keyphrase one, keyphrase two - business name will be more effective than business name - keyphrase one, keyphrase two.
It is a good idea to limit the number of keyphrases you target with any given page to two (three at the very most) per page. Trying to target more keyphrases results in diluted results for all phrases. It is better to add more pages to your site and target additional terms with additional pages and copy. Search engines will index all of your pages, so do not limit yourself to trying to optimize just your home (index) page.

(Meta) Description Tag

Most search engines ignore the description tag as far as keyword relevancy is concerned. It doesn't hurt to work your keywords into the description tag, but if you include the description tag, write it to entice visitors to come to your page. Most search engines use the Description tag to some extent when displaying search results. This is your chance to differentiate your site from all the other results in a search.

(Meta) Keyword Tag

Most search engines completely ignore the keyword tag. Years ago, this tag was used by the search engines for determining relevancy, but it was abused. If you include a keyword tag, keep it short. There is not much point in listing anything other than the keyphrases you have included in the title tag.

Copy

The single most important part of your on-page SEO effort is to ensure that your keyphrases are used within the copy (text) of your page. The keyphrases should be repeated as much as possible without compromising the text. Forcing the phrases into the text in choppy, stilted sentences may impress the search engines, but it will not impress your human visitors. It is counterproductive.
Keyphrases may (and should) be used in:
  • heading tags - Use h1, h2, h3, etc. tags to structure the main points on your pages. Use your keyphrases where appropriate.
  • main page text - Write about your subject matter. Use your keyphrases where appropriate.
  • strong, bold or italics tags - Use around your keyphrases where emphasis is warranted.
  • image alt tags - Each image on your page should have an alt tag for visitors with:
    • text only browsers
    • graphics turned off (dial-up connections, overseas connections, etc.)
    • handicapped browsers (with text-to-speech for the sight impaired)
Your alt tag should describe the image using your keyphrases where appropriate.
  • filenames - choosing keyword or keyphrase rich folder/directory and file names gives you another avenue for introducing your keywords/keyphrases in your internal site links. Use hyphens (dashes) to separate words in keyphrases. Search engines parse hyphens as spaces.
Be sure not to abuse image alt tags or heading tags with keyword stuffing. Search engines may penalize your site for that.
This is all you need to do for basic on page optimizations to produce dramatic results for non-optimized sites. Acheiving the right balance of keyphrase repetition and copy that also sells is an art. If you are interested in learning more about SEO copywriting, Karon Thackston's The Step-By-Step Copywriting Course is very good.

Keyword Research - SEO Tutorial

The very first step in the SEO process is to research which keywords and keyphrases you should be targeting. Your goal is to be ranked well for keywords / keyphrases that are highly targeted for your service, product, industry or offering. Optimizing your pages for keywords that are too general or unrelated to the subject of your site will only bring lots of unqualified traffic that does not convert well. Since you are paying for the bandwith, you want to maximize your ROI by targeting qualified traffic.

Company Name and Product Name Keywords

Generally, you do not need to optimize your site for your company name or product name(s). Unless your business / product names are composed of generic words (like Best Buy for example), your site will naturally attain the top rankings for those keywords. Most inbound links from external sites will reference your site / pages using your company name and/or product name(s) in the anchor text. Therefore, you can concentrate on keywords that people might use if they were searching for your type of service, product or offering.

Generating Good Keywords

Get some pencil and paper. Brainstorm for 20 minutes to an hour and jot down notes. Ask yourself, if I were looking for the type of offering my website advertises/sells, how would I search for it on the internet?
When you have a good list of keywords, you can use several on-line tools to search for related possibilities:

Evaluating Keyphrase Suitability

You should now have a fairly large list of keyphrases that are good candidates for targeting with your site. The next step is to research the viability of each keyphrase. Some keyphrases are more competitive than others. When you are just starting out, it makes more sense to target the less competitive phrases to achieve some early success.
The first step in evaluating keyphrases is determining how popular they are. Some of the tools listed above provide statistics showing popularity metrics for keyphrases. While these may not translate into an exact science, they do offer a rough guage of the popularity of a keyphrase. You can also use a Google AdWords account to get traffic estimates for your keyphrases on Google without actually paying any money. If you do follow through and set up an account, you can get some actual data on the keyphrase traffic.
The next step is to determine the competitiveness of each keyphrase. While WordTracker offers a KEI analysis, it is better to do your own analysis manually. Go to Google, enter your proposed keyphrase and search. Check the top 10-20 results.
  1. Do they contain the exact keyphrase in their title, description and page text?
  2. What is their PR?
  3. How many backlinks do they have?
If the listings do not contain the exact keyphrase (not just the keywords used in phrase), have low PR and/or few backlinks, then the chances are very good that you can obtain a top 10-20 listing fairly quickly for that keyphrase.
If you would like some expert assistance with keyphrase research, Measuring Up now offers very reasonable keyword research services for website designers, SEO/SEM consultants, and "do-it-yourself" webmasters.

10 Basic SEO Tips To Get You Started

1- Monitor where you stand:

You won't know if your SEO efforts are working unless you monitor your search standings. MarketingVox suggests that you keep an eye on your page rank with tools like Alexa and the Google toolbar.
It's also important to check your referrer log regularly to track where your visitors are coming from and the search terms they're using to find your site, according to PC World.

2- Keywords, keywords, keywords!

You should be conscious of placing appropriate keywords throughout every aspect of your site: your titles, content, URLs, and image names. Think about your keywords as search terms -- how would someone looking for information on this topic search for it?
The title tag and page header are the two most important spots to put keywords, PC World notes.
BEWARE: Putting ridiculous amounts of keywords on your site will get you labeled as a spammer, and search engine spiders are programmed to ignore sites guilty of "keyword-stuffing." Be strategic in your keyword use.

3- Link back to yourself:

There is probably no more basic strategy for SEO than the integration of internal links into your site -- it is an easy way to boost traffic to individual pages, SEO Consult says.
You should make it standard to link back to your archives frequently when creating new content. MarketingVox advises that you also make the anchor text search-engine-friendly: "The more relevant words point to a page, the more likely that page is to appear in search results when users run a query with those terms."
As with all other SEO approaches, be sure your links are appropriate, and be careful not to cross the line into excessive linking -- you don't want your visitors to get annoyed.

4- Create a sitemap:

Adding a site map -- a page listing and linking to all the other major pages on your site -- makes it easier for spiders to search your site.
"The fewer clicks necessary to get to a page on your website, the better," advises MarketingVox.

5- Search-friendly URLs:

Make your URLs more search-engine-friendly by naming them with clear keywords.
SEO Consult explains: "For instance, it’s easy to understand what ‘www.puppyfun.co.uk/puppyhealth/vitamins’ would contain. It’s less easy to understand if the in-house classification system of the business is used, for example ‘www.puppyfun.co.uk/11789/s201.htm’. A dynamic URL is similarly off-putting, even if it contains recognisable words: ‘www.puppyfun.co.uk/search/?s=”health”’.

6- Avoid Flash:

Flash might look pretty, but it does nothing for your SEO. According to the Search Engine Journal, "Frames, Flash and AJAX all share a common problem – you can’t link to a single page... Don’t use Frames at all and use Flash and AJAX sparingly for best SEO results."
"If you absolutely MUST have your main page as a splash page that is all Flash or one big image, place text and navigation links below the fold," the post continues.

7- Image descriptions:

Spiders can only search text, not text in your images -- which is why you need to make the words associated with your images as descriptive as possible.
Start with your image names: adding an "ALT" tag allows you to include a keyword-rich description for every image on your site. Perfect Optimization explains an easy way to do this.
The visible text around your images is valuable for SEO: MarketPosition suggests adding captions to all your pictures and being descriptive with the text in immediate physical proximity to your images.

8- CONTENT:

Your content needs to be fresh -- updating regularly and often is crucial for increasing traffic.
"The best sites for users, and consequently for search engines, are full of oft-updated, useful information about a given service, product, topic or discipline," MarketingVox explains.
One way to ensure that your site gets new content on a frequent basis is to integrate a blog. "Get the owner or CEO blogging. It’s priceless!" the Search Engine Journal suggests. An executive blog is an excellent way to reach out to your clients, create more opportunities for internal and external linking, while giving your site a more personal voice.

9- Social media distribution:

A CEO blog is just one element of social media distribution, an important SEO strategy according to SEO Consult. You should be distributing links to fresh content on your site across appropriate social networking platforms.
Whether displayed on your company's account, or recommended, re-tweeted, and re-distributed by someone else, this strategy exponentially muliplies the number of places where visitors will view your links.

10- Link to others:

Link to others
An easy way to direct more traffic to your site is by developing relationships with other sites.
PC World suggests that you personally ask the webmasters of well-respected sites if they'll include a link to your site on theirs. Be sure to return the favor -- then everyone wins!
Make certain that your partner has a good web-reputation, of course. MarketingVox warns against getting tied to a "link farm" whose bad SEO habits could bring you down.

Ways To Increase Your Google Page Rank

One of the most effective ways to increase the page rank of your website is by focusing on getting high quality backlinks to your website. In this article we'll talk about how to increase page rank by getting high quality backlinks..

Google is famous for developing the page rank formula and even though their toolbar page rank is usually out of date, they still put a huge amount of emphasis on the number and quality of backlinks when they rank a specific webpage.

The more high quality backlinks you acquire, the higher your website will rank in the search engines. They will also look at the quality (page rank) of the page that your backlink is on. It is important that you consider the quality of a backlink and not just the quantity.

Here are some methods of building backlinks that really work:

1. Article directories. There are literally thousands of directories. You should try to get links from the highest ranked directories and also focus on the ones that do not require a reciprocal link.

It is easy to find the top 10 article directories by searching in Google. You want to get your articles in his many of these as you possibly can.

2. Discussion forums. This is a good source of backlinks that can bring you excellent quality. You want to participate in discussions of forums that are highly ranked by Google.

An example of a good internet marketing forum is the famous Warrior Forum. Most forums allow you to add a signature containing one or more links back to your website. This is shown at the end of every post you make.

3. Submit your website to search engine directories. This is a good way to get a free link to your website and improve your search engine ranking. These ultimately can become a very high quality link and a long-term link as well.

4. Be a guest blog writer. Blogs are always looking for content and if you deliver unique content that is only submitted to them they will reward you by allowing you to put a couple of links in your article. These links become archived and can bring you an excellent quality link that increases your page rank.

5. Get relevant links. You cannot always control who links to your website so Google doesn't penalize you for links that are on the unrelated webpages.

However when you're targeting specific ways to increase your page rank you want to get your links on as many relevant websites as you possibly can. When a website is transferring some of their page rank to you Google puts more value on it if the link is coming from a site that relates to yours in some way.

These are just a few ideas on how to increase page rank by focusing on backlinks to your website. There are many strategies you can take and the quality of the link as well as the quantity of them are both important.

Internal Linking and Search Engine Rankings

Internal Linking in Your Website:
Ever been wondering if the internal link juice in your website is distributed in the most optimal way?
If you ensure that your internals links flow link power to your important pages, you have improved chances of having search engines index and rank them. Channeling internal website links to your important pages is a SEO process also known as PageRank Sculpting.

PageRank Sculpting Explained:
PageRank is the name of the Google search engine algorithm used to calculate importance of pages. It is done by calculating links and linking patterns across the entire internet. Google PageRank is one of many algorithms Google use to calculate and rank your pages in search engine result pages. But even with that said, pages with a high PageRank are more likely to bet get indexed more often and ranked higher in search results.
Realizing that internal links distribute link juice and PageRank scores across your website, it becomes an important factor when trying to optimize for search engine indexing and ranking.
If you optimize the internal linking to focus on your most important pages, you can give them a boost in search engines and search result rankings. This is the technique known as PageRank sculpting by people in the search engine optimization and website marketing industries.

List of Tips to Improve Link Juice Flow:
Experiment with link analyzer tools that can analyze and show how internal links flow juice and power to all your website pages. One such program is this website link analyzer.
Avoid leaking too much link juice on outgoing links of minimal quality. You can prevent that by adding nofollow to the links. Good examples of links to do this one are links in blog comments and links to social bookmarking website. Nofollow or eliminating these channels more link and PageRank score to your own internal pages.
Consider the pages that are important to have indexed and ranked in search engines, e.g. your content and product pages. Then focus internal linking on those.
